Poeta Atlantiae 2009, Lady Teleri the Well-Prepared

"Has love's sweet glance your heart ne'er warmed?"
Asked Branwen, of the witch transformed.
"Indeed I have," was her reply,
"And that is why I will deny
Your plea that I undo the spell
That made your lady's heart to swell
With love for valiant Sir Tristan.
For if her love for husband's man
- King Mark's best knight, I hear - is true,
Then whatsoever spell I do,
She'll only grieve her love that's lost
Much more than what her sins will cost."

Warm May greetings, fair Atlantia!  With spring upon us, the poet's fancy turns naturally to matters of love.  And so, at Sapphire Joust, Poeta Atlantiae will sponsor a competition on the theme of medieval romance - those tales of chivalry, love and magic.  Tell us a tale of knights and ladies, daring and honor - in verse!  Give us your own version of an old classic, discover a "lost fragment" that expands upon an existing tale, or compose something entirely new.

Judging criteria are available upon request.  Documentation is preferred.  Contact Lady Teleri the Well-Prepared (sca_bard@yahoo.com) for more information.

April Letter

What great deeds are done    by daring man
Battles fought boldly  blood shed by sword
For helpmeet's honor  hero wins the day
Ebonwoulfe and Esa  All now must attend
Of Atlantia regents    Rule they in glory!

To the people of Atlantia does Lady Teleri the Well-Prepared, their poet, send greetings.

Gentles, I beg you to consider Poetry.

It may be some time since last you saw her; perhaps in school, with a stern tutor insisting that you digest stiff verses you found loathsome.  You were young and she can put on airs, especially around tutors, appearing to be pretentious and erudite and elegant.

But she is also found among good company and merriment, clever and witty, inviting you to enjoy the play of sounds and syllables as a music all their own.

Consider Poetry alive, as she so often was - performed aloud, with a sigh or with a smile.  She embraces and holds the silent poets who commit their words to paper, the jongleurs who perform them for the crowds, and the crowds themselves who listen.

I pray you: consider Poetry.  Especially consider bringing your original or other poem about Spring to Storvik Performer's Revel, where I will be sponsoring a poetry performance challenge!

In service,
- Teleri the Well-Prepared

If you are always silent and say nothing
What stories will the younger generation have to tell?
If you hide yourself away in the thickest woods
How will your wisdom's light shine through?
A bag of bones is not a sturdy vessel
The wind and frost do their work soon enough.

~From a translation of an 8th century Chinese poem, possibly by Han Shan)
